Sanitary pads factory opens in Kaugege to boost menstrual hygiene

Jan 30, 2026

A new sanitary pads manufacturing plant has opened in Kaugege village, Kasgunga Ward, Suba North Constituency, marking a significant step toward improving menstrual hygiene and reducing school absenteeism among girls in Homa Bay County. The Galentine Care Sanitary Pads Factory was officially launched by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo, who toured the facility and inspected the first batch of locally produced pads. The factory is owned by entrepreneur Peter McOkodida. Governor Wanga said the initiative underscores the importance of strengthening local manufacturing to ensure essential products remain affordable for Kenyan families. She noted that Homa Bay continues to record high rates of teenage pregnancies, a trend she partly attributed to girls missing school due to lack of sanitary pads. “When a girl misses school because of lack of sanitary pads, she becomes vulnerable to teenage pregnancy. When pregnancy comes early, her chances of securing education, getting employment and shaping her future are reduced,” Wanga said. MP Millie Odhiambo echoed the governor’s sentiments, urging leaders to support homegrown industries that address community needs. She said the new factory directly responds to the demand for accessible and affordable sanitary products for girls and women. The facility is expected to increase access to menstrual hygiene products across the region while creating employment opportunities for local residents.
