82-year-old Oburu Odinga Declares Intent to Run in 2027 General Elections
May 26, 2026
DM party leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has announced that he will be a candidate in Kenya’s 2027 general elections. Speaking during the ODM Nyanza Region Aspirants Convention in Kisumu on Monday, May 25, the 82 year old senator said he intends to be on the ballot next year. He did not, however, specify whether he will defend his Siaya Senate seat or seek the presidency. Under the ODM constitution, the party leader automatically becomes its presidential flagbearer. Oburu has served in Parliament since 1994 when he succeeded his late father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, as the MP for Bondo Constituency. His declaration comes as ODM continues negotiations with President William Ruto’s UDA party on the formation of a broad based government. Oburu urged aspirants to prioritize public service over personal enrichment. He assured them that the party will conduct free and fair nominations. He added that ODM Electoral Board chairperson Emily Awita is a principled leader who cannot be bribed or give in to political pressure. “Even if you are my friend, even if you have money, don’t think that money can buy leadership. We are going to ensure there is free and fair competition,” Oburu said. Oburu also cautioned aspirants against turning internal contests into hostility, reminding them that nomination rivals remain crucial allies during the general election campaign. “These are your brothers and sisters. After nominations, they are the same people who will campaign for you once you win the ODM ticket,” he said. He defended political zoning, arguing that it has long existed in Kenyan politics through coalition arrangements and power sharing agreements. Oburu called on Nyanza leaders to remain united and strengthen ODM’s support base, emphasizing that the region remains central to the party’s national influence.
