One person killed and nine motorcycles burned after violence erupts at Kisumu church fundraiser

KISUMU, July 12 — One person was killed and nine motorcycles were burned on Sunday after violence broke out at St Stephen ACK Cathedral in Kisumu during a fundraising event attended by Siaya Governor James Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

According to police, the chaos began when a group of youths attempted to disrupt the event, sparking a confrontation between two rival groups. Several people were injured in the melee, and eight suspects were arrested as officers moved in to restore order.

Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga condemned the incident, describing it as an act of political intolerance and goonism that threatens public order and undermines national cohesion. He emphasized that citizens have a constitutional right to peacefully assemble, associate and participate in political activities without fear of violence.

Nyaga said the eight suspects remain in custody awaiting arraignment, and investigations are underway to identify and apprehend additional individuals linked to the unrest.

Police said no individual is above the law, regardless of political affiliation, social status or public office.

Nyaga said that anyone found engaging in violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, inciting supporters or disrupting lawful gatherings will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law.

Authorities have urged political leaders and supporters to exercise restraint and promote peaceful engagement as investigations continue.
