Former Karachuonyo MP Phoebe Muga Asiyo is dead at 93

Former Member of Parliament for Karachuonyo Phoebe Asiyo has died. She was 93. Asiyo died in North Carolina, USA, on Thursday, July 17, 2025. She was married to the late Richard Asiyo for more than 65 years. Asiyo was born on September 12, 1932, and was among the pioneer women to be elected to Parliament in Kenya. She was first elected the MP for Karachuonyo in 1980 and served until 1983, when Parliament was dissolved. She was re-elected to Parliament in 1992 after the inception of the multi-party system on a Ford Kenya ticket until 1997 when the late Paul Adhu Awiti took over. Prior to serving as the MP for Karachuonyo, Asiyo joined Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization in 1953. She was elected the chairperson in 1958.
