Fresh Violence in Rusinga as Fishermen Clash Over Fishing Boundaries
Jun 04, 2026
MBITA, June 2 – Tension remains high in Rusinga Island after a violent confrontation between fishermen from Litare and Kiumba beaches left at least four people injured on Tuesday during a dispute over fishing boundaries. The injured fishermen from Litare were rushed to Mbita Sub County Hospital and Tom Mboya Level 4 Hospital in Suba North, where they are receiving treatment. According to witnesses, the fight began when Litare fishermen accused their Kiumba counterparts of encroaching on their fishing zone. Fishermen from Kiumba, however, claimed their nets had been destroyed and alleged that Litare fishermen attempted to seize their boat. Reinforcements called in by Kiumba fishermen escalated the confrontation into a wider clash. Police have arrested at least eight fishermen from Kiumba to assist with investigations. The latest violence comes against the backdrop of deadly clashes in Suba sub county in recent months, highlighting growing tensions over shrinking fishing grounds in Lake Victoria. A 35 year old fisherman, Fredrick Oduol, was killed at Mukuyu Beach in Suba sub county after rival groups clashed over fishing grounds. He was struck with a paddle during a fight sparked by accusations of encroachment and later died while receiving treatment at Mikuyu Health Centre. Beach management officials have linked these fatal disputes to the declining fish population in Lake Victoria, which has intensified competition and territorial conflicts among fishermen. They warn that unless illegal fishing practices are curbed, such violent confrontations may continue. Security officers and beach leaders noted that these incidents underscore the urgent need for conflict resolution mechanisms and sustainable fishing practices to ease pressure on the lake’s dwindling resources.
