Government creates new Rusinga Island division with headquarters in Kaswanga
Jan 23, 2026
The government has created a new division in Suba District to be called Rusinga. The new division will cover Rusinga and Ndodhe islands with headquarters at Kaswanga. Mbita sub-County Commissioner Peter Mutiso held a consultative meeting with the residents on Wednesday, January 22 at the Tom Mboya Memorial Hospital in Kaswanga to finalize the plans for the new division. Rusinga has Rusinga East, Rusinga Central and Rusinga West locations. Before Kenya’s 2010 constitutional reforms, Suba District consisted of five divisions, namely Central, Geassi, Lambwe, Mbita and Mfangano. The government has since added Ruma-Kaksingri East, Kaksingri West, Gwasi South and Gwassi North.
