A grandmother in Karachuonyo took six live chickens to Adiedo Secondary School to clear grandchildren’s school fee balance of Kshs 245,000. Consolata Aoko Oduya made the move after her grandchildren, Hillary Omondi and Mitchell Akoth, were sent home due to an unpaid fee balance. The elderly woman arrived at the school with her granddaughter and a cage of live chickens—one of which laid an egg on arrival. Mama Aoko said she went to the school hoping the principal, James Kabarak, would accept the chickens as payment to offset part of the debt. Each chicken was valued at KSh 1,000. She pleaded for a receipt of KSh 6,000 to allow her grandchildren to return to their studies. Principal Kabarak noted that cases like the grandmother’s highlight the need for prioritized bursary disbursements, as many students face similar financial struggles. A number of well-wishers donated money to clear the fee balance. Governor Gladys Wanga pledged to pay fees for the two boys until college.
