Homa Bay County Woman Representative Joyce Atieno Bensouda has condemned police brutality, noting that it led to the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang. Bensouda said the police must exercise restraint and provide security as required by law. She said that the police need emotional and psychological counselling to carry out their duties professionally. The MP said that Ojwang’s killing was unacceptable. She said that leaders must ensure that justice must be served. Albert Ojwang, 31, died in police custody on June 8 at Central Police Station in Nairobi, just hours after being arrested by DCI officers from his home in Homa Bay. A postmortem revealed he had been strangled, triggering widespread protests and demands for accountability. Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo Millie Odhiambo decried the killing, noting the immense pain inflicted on the family and the country. “When we saw you mourn, it struck a national nerve. Men rarely mourn publicly but learning that Albert was your only child made the pain even deeper,” Odhiambo, who is the National Assembly Minority Whip, said.
