Kasipul politician Philip Aroko arrested by police over Ongondo Were murder investigation

May 08, 2025

Kasipul politician and businessman Philip Nahashon Aroko has turned himself to the police in Nairobi in connection with the investigation of the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were. Aroko has declared interest in the Kasipul Constituency seat that Were had held since 2017. Aroko and his lawyer, Danstan Omari, reported to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters on May 7. Aroko then presented himself to the Gigiri Police Station where he was booked overnight. He is expected to record a statement. Aroko read local politics in his summon by the police. Aroko blamed Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, accusing her of attempting to link Aroko to Were’s murder. Aroko said that politics in Homa Bay County has been turned into madness, adding that it is thuggery. Lawyer Omari said that Aroko’s summoning had very little to do with facts but rather county politics, noting that powerful individuals do not want Aroko to attend Were’s burial. Omari later confirmed that Aroko, from the DCI headquarters, presented himself to the Gigiri Police Station where he was booked and will now spend the night until Thursday, when he will be interrogated.
