A mass funeral service was held on Saturday, August 16 for 22 of the 26 family members who were killed in a bus crash along Kisumu-Kakamega road on their way from a relative’s funeral in Nyahera. The service was held at Naki Primary School in Katombo village in Koguta, Nyakach in Kisumu County. The 26 people died when a bus belonging to AIC Naki High School lost control at the Coptic roundabout, just outside Kisumu City and plunged into a ditch. The government has released about Ksh. 7 million for the funeral expenses. All the medical bills have been waived as well. ODM leader Raila Odinga said the loss as one of the darkest moments for Nyakach and the country at large. “When an old person like me dies, people say it is okay because he has lived his life. But when young people die, it is like the flowers of the earth being destroyed and that makes it very painful,” Raila said. Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o assured the bereaved families of continued help, revealing that an account had already been opened at KCB Bank to coordinate contributions towards support efforts.
