Mfangano residents question missing Kshs 300 million for public ferry

Nov 09, 2025

More than Kshs 300 million that had been allocated for the much-awaited public ferry to Mfangano Island is missing. The residents asked the Senate Committee on Transport Roads, and Housing that held a session on the island to investigate whether the funds have been misappropriated. The Mfangano Development Forum in 2022 requested a government-owned ferry to ply Mfangano Island, Takawiri and Remba to mainland in Mbita. MDF chairperson Daniel Rakoro said the residents have not been informed on the status of the ferry. The Senate Committee chairman Senator Eddy Oketch Oketch said the money was allocated for the construction of the ferry at the Kisumu Shipyard. Senator Oketch said the committee will investigate why the money was diverted, saying the ferry service between Mbita and Mfangano Island is long overdue.
