Migori River Bridge temporarily closed as floodwaters rise after heavy rains
Mar 07, 2026
The Kenya National Highways Authority has announced the immediate temporary closure of the Migori River Bridge following a sharp rise in water levels that has made the crossing unsafe for motorists and pedestrians. Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli said on Saturday, March 7, 2026, that the authority attributed the closure to heavy rains that have pounded the region in recent days, causing the river to swell beyond safe limits. KeNHA did not specify when the bridge will reopen, saying it will remain closed until further notice. The agency urged road users to plan their travel accordingly and avoid attempting to access the flooded crossing. Motorists have been advised to use the Kiringi Bridge along the Migori–Kehancha Road as the designated alternative route. The authority said it is closely monitoring conditions on the ground and will begin repair and restoration works once water levels recede enough to allow engineers to safely access the site. The closure is expected to disrupt travel for traders, commuters, and residents who rely on the bridge as a key link within the region.
