Millie Odhiambo defends Beryl Odinga burial in Bondo, eyes Rusinga Island resting place

Dec 20, 2025

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo has defended the burial arrangements for Beryl Odinga at her father’s home in Kango Ka Jaramogi. Millie said the burial didn’t deviate from traditional Luo customs. The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga announced that Beryl Odinga would be buried at the family’s burial ground instead of any of her previous matrimonial homes in Gem, Siaya or Zimbabwe. Millie said that while traditions are important, they should not overshadow individual preferences, especially in matters of burial. “All those who firmly opine that Beryl Odinga should be buried according to Luo customs, please confirm that your six lower teeth have been removed in strict conformity to culture,” she said. Millie dismissed these criticisms as selective and impractical, pointing out that not all traditional practices are uniformly observed in contemporary society. The MP said that cultural practices evolve over time and that forcing adherence to archaic rituals can be both exclusionary and impractical. Millie told mourners during Beryl Odinga’s burial that even her, when the time comes, she’d be buried in Rusinga Island. Millie is married to Mabona Magugu, a Zimbabwean national. Beryl Odinga, who was married in Zimbabwe, died on November 25, 2025, while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital. She was buried on Saturday, December 6, 2025, in Bondo at Kang'o Ka Jaramogi in the Odinga family cemetery next to her later mother, Mama Mary Juma Odinga.
