Members of Parliament have approved Ida Odinga for appointment as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Program. UNEP headquarters are in Nairobi. The House endorsed recommendations by the Departmental Committee on Defense, Intelligence and Foreign Relations, which found Ida suitable for the role, citing her leadership record, long-standing environmental advocacy, and demonstrated integrity. Ida appeared before the committee on Friday, February 20, where she outlined her priorities for strengthening Kenya’s engagement with UNEP. She stressed that environmental management directly shapes the quality of life for Kenyans, warning that mismanagement would have long-term consequences. “How we manage or mismanage our environment will determine the quality of life we live,” she told the committee. She noted that Kenya and Africa are emerging as global leaders in climate action and called for urgent, coordinated efforts to address environmental degradation. Ida said she intends to “help stop the destruction of our planet and pursue every specific priority” aligned with Kenya’s environmental and development goals. Ida also expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for nominating her, adding that her late husband, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, remained her greatest supporter and influence.
