May 10, 2025
Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga has asked for political tolerance among ODM supporters, saying different opinions are needed to strengthen the party. Raila said the party secretary is the spokesman of the party is the Secretary General. When Edwin Sifuna speaks, he speaks on behalf of the party but he must tone down his criticism of other ODM leaders who joined the government under the broad-based partnership. Raila was responding to claims by Treasurer Secretary John Mbadi who complained that Sifuna unfairly targets the minister. Speaking on Friday, May 9 during the funeral of late Kasipul MP Charles Were in Oyugis, Homa Bay County, Raila explained that his agreement with the Kenya Kwanza government is founded on the ten-point agenda listed in the Memoranda of Understanding. Raila added that it would be beneficial for the party if the members supported the four ODM Cabinet Secretaries in their work. Mbadi urged Sifuna to support his role in government, citing that it would be beneficial for ODM if he, alongside ministers Hassan Joho of Mining, Opiyo Wandayi of Energy and Wycliffe Oparanya succeeded in their duties. Mbadi said he was the longest-serving ODM chairman. He added that he wanted to demonstrate to Kenyans how a Raila government would have worked. "If I am there, I expect total support from the part, starting with the Secretary General. My brother Sifuna, I am a member of your party and I don't belong to any other. If I fail, there's no way you can convince anyone in 2027 that ODM can run a government." Mbadi said.
