Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairperson Wafula Chebukati has died. Chebukati, 64, died on Thursday, February 19. Chebukati served as IEBC chairman for six year. He retired in January 2023 after overseeing the 2022 General Election. President William Ruto sent a message of condolence, saying Chebukati’s death was a great loss to the country. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also sent condolences to Chebukati’s family. “Times like these are never easy and no amount of words and assurances of solidarity can ever fill the void left, but that is all we can offer. My thoughts are with the entire family, the widow mama Mary, sons Jonathan and Emmanuel at this difficult time,” Raila said. Chebukati was a former member of the Orange Democratic Movement party. He contested Saboti Constituency parliamentary seat in 2007 on ODM ticket and came in second place amid allegations of rigging. Chebukati was married to Mary Chebukati, who was recently appointed chairperson of the Commission on Revenue Allocation. He leaves behind two adult sons, Jonathan and Emmanuel.
