Hundreds of secondary school students from across Rusinga Island gathered on Friday, March 13, 2026, for a career and mentorship day hosted at Tom Mboya High School. Learners from Tom Mboya, Kaswanga Girls, Kamasengre, Wanyama, Waware, Ogola Jaseme, and Harrison Odhiambo secondary schools took part in the full day program aimed at guiding them on academic choices and future career pathways. The event focused on helping students understand course selection, aligning subject strengths with career opportunities, and making informed decisions as they prepare for higher education and the job market. Students said the sessions gave them clarity and motivation as they think about their futures. Agnes Omondi, a student at Kaswanga Girls who hopes to become a lawyer, said the program helped her understand the academic requirements and personal discipline needed to pursue her dream. “Attending the career day offered me an opportunity to understand what is required to realise my goals,” she said. Evans Aduda from Tom Mboya High School said the mentorship sessions strengthened his ambition to pursue journalism. He noted that interacting with facilitators opened his eyes to the skills and commitment needed in the media profession. Teachers, mentors, and invited facilitators led interactive sessions designed to broaden students’ awareness of emerging fields and the competencies required to succeed.
