Surprise celebrations in Kisumu as Governor Anyang Nyongo turns 80

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o turned 80 on Friday, October 10. Nyongo, who has served as the governor since 2017, thanked his wife, Dorothy, and the county staff for organizing the surprise birthday party. Nyongo previously served as a Cabinet minister and Member of Parliament. He has openly talked about his many health issues, a gesture he said could help save people’s lives. When he was being treated in California for prostate cancer, he wrote articles in local newspapers to create cancer awareness. The articles did not go well with some men. Nyongo said he received a lot of hostile phone messages, with some people enquiring whether he was already dead. Nyongo has become a champion of public health, especially cancer.
