Three Fishermen Killed in Suba North Over Fishing Grounds Disputes

May 15, 2026

Tension is high in Suba North Constituency after three fishermen were killed in two separate clashes linked to long running disputes over fishing grounds in Lake Victoria. In the first incident, 35 year old Fredrick Oduol died on the evening of May 4 following a violent confrontation at Mukuyu Beach. The fight erupted after rival groups accused each other of encroaching on restricted fishing areas. According to local reports, the disagreement quickly escalated, with fishermen turning on one another during the expedition. Oduol sustained serious injuries after being struck during the melee and later died while receiving treatment. A second deadly confrontation occurred in the Uwi Beach area, where Enock Opiyo, 25, and Dancan Okoth, 40, lost their lives. The two were among a five member team that confronted fishermen from Koginga Beach, accusing them of operating inside a designated breeding zone. The altercation intensified, and the Koginga group allegedly rammed the victims’ boat, causing it to capsize. While three fishermen were rescued, Opiyo and Okoth drowned. Beach management officials have condemned the incidents, warning that illegal fishing practices are depleting fish stocks and fueling territorial tensions across the lake. They fear that unless unlawful methods are curbed, similar conflicts may continue to erupt. The leaders are urging communities to explore alternative livelihoods to ease pressure on the dwindling fishery resources. Authorities have launched investigations into both incidents as efforts to restore calm in the affected beaches continue.
