The two brothers who were on Saturday October 4, 2025, arrested over the murder of university professor Thomas Onyango Mboya over a prolonged land dispute in Kakrigu Village, Rusinga Island in Mbita, Homa Bay County are still waiting for trial. Evans Owuor Orwa, 40, and Michael Odhiambo Odero, 49, were arrested in Mbita area for the killing of their brother Prof. Thomas Tonny Onyango Mboya, 56 on September 30, 2025. Police had said that three other suspects were linked to the murder of Prof Mboya. The suspects appeared in court on Monday October 6 to face murder charges. Professor Onyango Mboya was brutally murdered near his home in Kakrigu, Rusinga Island, Suba, following a land dispute. The attacker, armed with a panga, caught him off guard and ended his life. He was attacked while erecting beacons on the disputed land. Mboya was an associate professor and director of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the Technical University of Kenya. Mboya’s father, Wilson Onyango Opanga, was also attacked and suffered deep panga cuts. Police said that witnesses reported that one of the assailants, who had allegedly encroached and built on the contested property, became enraged after a court ruling directed him to demolish his structures. Instead of complying, he reportedly stormed the site armed with a panga, beheading Prof. Mboya before turning on his father. The suspects had fled the scene after residents raised alarm, narrowly escaping a mob that pursued them.
