Two students from the Technical University of Mombasa Killed on way for Funeral
Aug 09, 2026
Two students from the Technical University of Mombasa lost their lives and 29 others were injured when their funeral convoy bus overturned along the Awasi-Ahero Highway in Kisumu County on Friday, August 7, 2026.
The students were traveling from Mombasa to attend the burial of former student leader Elvis "Beast" Otieno, who served as the students’ body chairman and passed away two weeks ago.
Police reports indicate the bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the driver lost control, causing it to veer off the road and overturn near the Othoo/Ngere area. The driver reportedly swerved to avoid a head-on collision with a speeding oncoming vehicle.
The deceased have been identified as Evans Odiwuor, 22, who died at the scene, and Roony Owen Odhiambo, 23, who died upon arrival at Lisa Hospital. Their bodies were moved to Ahero Sub-County Mortuary and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where they await autopsy.
Out of the 29 injured students, 14 have been treated and discharged, while 15 remain hospitalized.
Despite the tragedy, the burial of the late student leader Elvis "Beast" Otieno proceeded as planned on Saturday, August 8, 2026, in Awasi.
Eyewitness accounts describe the bus as dangerously overloaded, with some students seated on top and others hanging out of the windows as it sped along the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway just before the accident.
Brian Ochieng, a fellow TUM student, said the vehicle dogged a small car and lost control and fell.
