Violence Erupts as Orengo Takes ODM “Linda Mwananchi” Campaign to Mbita and Sindo

May 29, 2026

Violence broke out on Friday, May 29 as Siaya Governor James Orengo took his ODM “Linda Mwananchi” campaign to Mbita and Sindo in Homa Bay County. Orengo accused top ODM leaders of “selling the party to President William Ruto” and claimed that the party had been hijacked by leaders serving in the broad based government. He alleged that these leaders had been “bribed by the government” while ordinary Kenyans continued to suffer from poverty, high living costs, and lack of school fees. The governor, who has declared himself the “defector ODM party leader,” questioned the rush to install Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as acting ODM leader following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in India on October 15, 2025. Oburu was later confirmed by the National Delegates Conference earlier this year. Chaos erupted when Orengo’s convoy was blocked at Rodi Kopany by a group of men he described as hired goons. He alleged that the attackers were working with police officers, claiming some were armed with teargas canisters. Two people suffered panga wounds to the head, and several others were injured as stones were hurled at the convoy. Multiple vehicles had their windows and windshields shattered. Orengo insisted the attack was planned, accusing Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga of orchestrating it following recent political disagreements. He said he had earlier criticized Wanga for “selling out the party.” Despite the clashes, Orengo urged his supporters to remain peaceful, saying they would not retaliate. Orengo’s Political Message when addressing supporters in Mbita and Sindo, Orengo: • Declared himself the “new Raila Odinga.” • Called on President Ruto to implement the 10 Point Agenda signed with Raila Odinga. • Warned that youth unemployment was a “time bomb” and demanded compensation for victims of political violence. • Announced he will run for the presidency in 2027, urging the Luo community not to wait until 2032 as suggested by Treasury Minister John Mbadi and ODM chair Gladys Wanga. • Encouraged the Luo community to register as voters ahead of the next election. • Praised Tom Mboya’s Airlift Program, saying it opened educational opportunities for generations of Kenyans. • Called for support for leaders such as Babu Owino and Millie Odhiambo, describing them as fearless defenders of the community. Orengo said his tour of Suba North and Suba South, including stops in Rusinga, Mbita, and Sindo, was successful and that he was warmly received by local residents, especially women traders.
