Nov 20, 2025
At least 10 candidates are battling out for the Ugunja Constituency by election. The candidates are Benson Obol Otieno of United Green Movement Party, Eric Ofiro of Jubilee Party, Vincent Olengo of Kenya Moja, Fredrick Ochiel of United Democratic Movement, and Oliver Ochieng of the National Liberal Party. Others are Lilian Akinyi of National Alliance Party, Moses Omondi of ODM, Orodi Odhiambo of Wiper party, Maurice Okumu of Liberal Party of Kenya, and Chrispine Budo of KANU. The seat became vacate after Opiyo Wandayi was named minister for Energy in the broad-based government negotiated by President William Ruto and the later ODM party leader Raila Odinga. President Ruto’s UDA did not sponsor a candidate in the by-election. UDA leaders have joined ODM party officials to campaign for the party's candidate in by-election scheduled for Thursday, November 27. National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah pledged to work with Omondi if he is elected. Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot also campaigned for Omondi, saying political differences should not hinder development. Energy minister Opiyo Wandayi urged residents to turn out in large numbers and vote for Omondi. Omondi was the CDF manager under Wandayi. Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo said the by-election is an opportunity to reaffirm the region’s loyalty to the party. Siaya Governor James Orengo has also endorsed Omondi. ODM party leader Oburu Oginga has also thrown his support behind Omondi.
