A Migori-based blogger who was arrested by the police mysteriously died on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Central Police Station in Nairobi. Albert Omondi Ojwang's death has sparked outrage in parts of Kenya. He was arrested on Friday, June 6 following a complaint by the deputy police chief, who accused him of tarnishing his name on social media. Ojwang was arrested over a post on X that was allegedly critical of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat. He was subsequently transferred over 350 km to Nairobi and booked into the Central Police Station on Saturday. The Kenyan police said the Independent Policing Oversight Authority has launched an investigation. Officers who were on duty when Ojwang died in custody will also not be returning to work while they await the outcome of investigations, said police Inspector-General Douglas Kanja. Kanja said Ojwang was arrested after Lagat filed a complaint that his name was being "tarnished". Kanja announced that senior officers at Nairobi's Central Police Station had been "interdicted".
