Tension and political unrest marked the Linda Mwananchi caravan’s tour of Homa Bay County on Sunday, August 16, as movement leaders pushed ahead with their planned engagements despite threats of violence and attempts to disrupt their rally.
Police in Homa Bay arrested two youths near Wiobiero High School along the Sori–Rodi Kopany road and seized five pangas allegedly intended for use in violence. The suspects were reportedly travelling from Ndhiwa toward Homa Bay Town as the convoy made its way into the county.
The leaders—Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Brian Weke, Faith Odhiambo, Senator Richard Onyonka and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya—faced difficulties entering Homa Bay amid rising tension. They were hosted by Suba South MP Caroli Omondi.
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma later admitted paying bodaboda riders to block the caravan, even warning hotel owners against hosting supporters. Babu Owino criticized leaders who mobilize youths for violence, urging them instead to address unemployment and other challenges facing young people.
Violence erupted in Nyandiwa, Suba South Constituency, where youths attempted to block the movement’s rally. Tear gas was fired at the convoy in parts of Homa Bay, forcing crowds to scatter as stones and barricades appeared along the road. Supporters stepped in to clear the route, allowing the leaders to proceed under police escort.
Large crowds gathered in Nyandiwa and later in Homa Bay Town, with some supporters climbing onto vehicles as the procession moved through the streets. Senator Sifuna thanked residents for their reception.
Governor Orengo condemned the disruptions and criticized the police response, saying residents had welcomed the movement across the county.
He added, “This is not the Kenya we want… but we shall overcome.”
