Police have arrested a key suspect linked to the killing of Professor Tom Onyango Mboya, who was murdered last year in a land dispute in Kakrigu Village on Rusinga Island, Homa Bay County. Mbita Deputy County Commissioner Peter Mutiso confirmed that the suspect, Bernard Okoth Ouma, 36, was arrested on Monday from a hideout in Muhuru Bay. The operation was led by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. Mutiso said three other suspects believed to have participated in the attack remain at large, but security agencies are pursuing crucial leads to apprehend them. Professor Mboya, an Associate Professor and Director of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the Technical University of Kenya, was killed in September 2025 in Suba North. He was reportedly attacked with a panga during a confrontation over a land dispute and died on the spot. Police had earlier arrested two brothers on October 4, 2025, in connection with the killing as investigations intensified. Authorities say the latest arrest brings them closer to dismantling the group believed to have orchestrated the fatal attack.
