The counties of Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Siaya have jointly announced that the 6th Piny Luo Cultural Festival will be held in Kisumu from December 14 to 16, 2026.
The annual three-day cultural event celebrates the heritage, music, and traditions of the Luo community, bringing together delegations from multiple countries to foster unity, dialogue, and economic growth.
The annual festival brings together Luo communities from Kenya and the diaspora to celebrate their heritage through traditional music and dance, cultural exhibitions, sporting activities, business forums and academic discussions.
Organizers say this year’s edition will be the most expansive yet, with participation expected from Luo communities across East, Central and parts of West Africa, as well as those living around the world.
Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o said on Friday, August 7 that the festival remains a vital platform for reflection, dialogue and planning for the future of the Luo community. He noted that the event was originally conceived by the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga as a way to preserve Luo culture while encouraging conversations on leadership, education, entrepreneurship and youth empowerment.
Nyong’o emphasized that the festival is grounded in the Luo wisdom that experience is the greatest teacher, highlighting the community’s commitment to learning, adapting and working together for future generations.
The governor was accompanied by Luo Council of Elders chair Mzee Odungi Randa, Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili, and other community leaders.
Nyong’o said the 2026 festival comes at a defining moment for the Luo community, offering an opportunity to reaffirm unity, celebrate cultural heritage and strengthen economic prospects. He called on Luo people, friends of the community, development partners and the general public to support the festival and take part in shaping the community’s future.
